SANTO DOMINGO (AccessDR) -- One of the most anticipated moments for nature lovers who visit the Dominican Republic is the start of the season for whale watching in the marine sanctuaries of Samana and Puerto Plata, which mobilizes about 40 thousand tourists every year.
The season begins on January 15th and runs through April, during which humpback whales travel from the cold North to the warm Dominican waters to mate and reproduce.
This activity is regulated by the Ministry of Environment, who grants permits for tour operators, hotels and companies that conduct tours of the bay of Samana, which is internationally recognized as the primary site of the Caribbean region for observing these gentle marine giants.
For these tours, which place these marine mammals into direct contact with tourists, safe boats are used and also an onshore observation Centre has been habilitated in Punta Balandra, near the town of Samana.
The boats start leaving at 9:00am for a journey of about 30 minutes through the area where the huge marine mammals and their young tend to do stunts in the water and cast their characteristic sounds.
There are countless companies offering this type of attraction to foreign and domestic visitors, that can visit through a modern and safe road or use the international airport in Samana.
In addition, the boutique hotel Sublime Samana Hotel & Residences, as part of the program of activities for its guests, decided to introduce tours to watch the humpback whales during whale season.
Vista Mare hotel also offers this service. Vista Mare is a resort located on a hill near the coast of Samana in front of Cayo Levantado, and “Luxury Bahia Principe Samana Don Pablo Collection”.
