SANTO DOMINGO (AccessDR) -- The award, issued by the Mexican-based cement company CEMEX, recognizes some of the Colonial Zone’s most beautiful streets.
CEMEX currently operates in 50 countries.
The Colonial Zone’s Tourism Development Program is sponsored by the Ministry of Tourism and funded by the Inter-American Development Bank.
The program promotes a city without architectural barriers as a way to guarantee the free movement of physically-challenged citizens.
From the very beginning of the Zone’s remodeling project, the Ministry of Tourism has worked with various institutions – such as the National Council on the Disabled (CONADIS) – which work for the inclusion of citizens that are physically challenged.
According to a local 2013 survey, 7% of the Dominican population – 700,000 citizens -faces some sort of physical challenge.
