SANTO DOMINGO (AccessDR) -- The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) declared the Merengue, the Dominican Republic’s authentic musical expression, as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
Although it originated in the Dominican Republic during the late 19th and early 20th century, many countries in the region have adapted this well-known Caribbean rhythm. The decision was adopted by a 24-member UNESCO Commission, charged with the protection of humanity’s intangible cultural heritage.
The merengue is the country’s most important dance rhythm which first began in the 19th century.
This musical rhythm is produced mainly by an accordion, a metal gourd and drums.
The rhythm has become popular through the region, as well as in Europe.
In its origins, the merengue also included the guitar, but years later this instrument was replaced by the accordion.
Together, these instruments constitute the structure of a typical merengue band.
