The Dominican Republic: Top Golf Destination In Latin America

SANTO DOMINGO (AccessDR) -- The Dominican Republic was once again distinguished as the “Golf Destination of the Caribbean and Latin America 2016″ by the International Association of Golf Tour Operators (IAGTO).

The D.R. received the award for its magnificent golf courses, where many border the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. National and international golfers highlight the country’s climate and world-class courses.

Isabel Vasquez, director of the Dominican Tourism Promotion Office in the Iberian Peninsula, said that this international recognition is the result of the joint efforts carried out by the country’s hotel industry, tour operators and the Ministry of Tourism.

All have come together to provide excellent infrastructures and world-class services in its golf courses.

“The Dominican Republic is honored to receive the award as the best golf destination in the Caribbean and Latin America for the year 2016, which means that more golf lovers will become familiar with our destination,” said Isabel Vasquez.

Currently, the golf industry annually contributes some US$200 million to the country’s economy.

That number is expected to grow in 2016, according to a study carried out by the International Association of Golf Tour Operators.

The Industry Has Grown 10% Since 2014

The Association also explained that since 2014 this sector has grown 10%, with the arrival to the Dominican Republic of more than 140,000 golfers.

World Famous Architects Have Designed Some of the Country’s Best Golf Courses

The Dominican Republic is home to some of the most dramatic and spectacular golf courses in the world, designed by such international legends as Pete Dye, P.B. Dye, Jack Nicklaus, Robert Trent Jones, Gary Player and Tom Fazio. Overall, the country has 28 courses featuring the highest golf standards and world-class services.

Some of the country’s top golf courses are “Punta Espada Golf Club,” in Cap Cana; “La Cana,” at Punta Cana Resort & Club and the Teeth of the Dog and Dye Fore, at Casa de Campo. Each features stunning views of the Caribbean Sea, and unique challenges created by the best designers in the world of golf.

Recognition

The Association’s tour operators coordinate more than 85% of the world’s golf vacations.

Its 592 members, from 61 different countries, selected the 2016 winners.

The judges nominated the best golf destinations based on the opinions of their clients and overall customer satisfaction, the quality of golf courses and accommodations, price, professional conduct of suppliers, support of the local tourism industry, and easy accessibility to play.
